The Research Unit
Applied Research on Migration and Integration
The Expert Council’s Research Unit conducts applied research in the area of migration and integration. Research findings are shared with policy makers, civil society, academia and the general public through publications, conference presentations and expert networks.
The Research Unit complements the work of the Expert Council. The Unit’s core funding is provided by the Stiftung Mercator.
The Research Unit investigates pressing issues and emerging trends in migrant education, forced migration, labor migration, as well as health and demographics of migrant populations. From European refugee policy to skilled migration to school segregation, the Unit’s research seeks to inform expert communities and the public debate.
By crossing disciplinary boundaries the SVR Research Unit conducts innovative and practice-oriented research such as the first ever comparative analysis of the labour market entry of international students in the EU.
The Research Unit cooperates with leading research institutes and think tanks in and outside of Germany, including the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, the Migration Policy Group and the German Federal Institute for Population Research.
The Unit is deeply embedded in academic, political and philanthropic networks. Together with our partners we engage in joint research, issue joint publications and co-host events in and outside of Germany.

In addition, the Research Unit occasionally contributes its expertise to external research projects which are commissioned by federal and state ministries, think tanks and intergovernmental organizations.
