Prof. Dr Birgit Glorius

Member of the Expert Council

Birgit Glorius is Professor of Human Geography with a focus on European Migration Research at Chemnitz University of Technology. Her research focuses on the procedural nature of migration and its consequences for regions of origin and arrival, transnationalism, local constellations of refugee admission, responses in the receiving society and local/regional policy approaches to integration and participation. Regional research focuses include eastern Germany, East-Central Europe and the Western Balkan states. Birgit Glorius is co-editor of Z’Flucht (German Journal of Forced Migration and Refugee Studies) and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).

Professional background:

  • Diploma in geography with minors in geology, political science and sociology at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, the University of Würzburg and the University of Texas at Austin, 1990–1997
  • Junior and Senior Researcher in the Social Geography Research Group at the Institute of Geosciences, University of Halle-Wittenberg, 1998–2009
  • PhD in geography at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, 2007
  • Senior Researcher in the City of Leipzig’s Working Group “Educational Monitoring, Planning and Management” within the Project “Learning in Place /Lernen vor Ort”, 2010–2012
  • Junior Professor of the Human Geography of East-Central Europe at Chemnitz University of Technology, 2013–2018
  • Professor of Human Geography with a focus on European Migration Research at Chemnitz University of Technology, since October 2018
